The Expert Commentators
Chris Johnson – One of the games true greats. A Triple Premiership Player at the Brisbane Lions. His career started at Fitzroy in 1994 and he moved to Brisbane in 1997. He retired at the end of 2007 having played 264 Games and Kicking 172 Goals. He was also inducted as a Member of the Indigenous Team of the Century.
Gilbert McAdam – “Gilly” played at St Kilda from 1991– 1993 and then moved to Brisbane who were then the Brisbane Bears where he played for 3 seasons. He played in total 111 Game and kicked 89 Goals. Gilly was also awarded the Magarey Medal in 1989 while playing for Central Districts in the SANFL.
Ronnie Burns – Played 134 matches for Geelong between1996 and 2002 kicking 239 goals and leading the clubs goal kicking in 5 oft hose years. He then moved to the Adelaide Crows from 2002 – 2004 where he played 20 games and kicked 23 goals.
Glenn James OAM. A true gentlemen of the game. “Jamesy” umpired 166 VFL Matches between1977 and 1985 which also include the 1982 and 1984 Grand Finals. He was awarded Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 1987 and was also inducted into the Indigenous Team of the Century. No broadcast is complete without a giggle or two from “Jamesy”.
Peter “Crackers” Keenan – In Australian Rules Football, names get no bigger than Crackers! “Crackers by name and Crackers by nature” !, Peter played 213 games between 1970 and 1982 with Melbourne, North Melbourne and Essendon and was a member of North Melbourne’s1977 Premiership side. A true character of the game, he became known for his on field humor, which spilled over into his media career. Peter became a respected commentator with Channel 7, and also as a part of the ABC and Southern Cross Broadcast Teams. Joined the NIRS Commentary Team in 2005.
Damien Kitschke – Brought a breath of fresh air into the NIRS Team after joining in 2002. A surprisingly well-versed performer who joined the team after a long-playing career in the South Australian National Football League and St-Kilda in the AFL. Damien is a good humoured, clear and precise broadcaster onair, who brings a wonderful level of excitement into our broadcasts.
Danny Craven – “Chippa” played for St Kilda and the Brisbane Bears. Despite a number of horrific injuries he still managed to play 58games and kick 17 goals. Remaining in Queensland after his AFL career ended, Chippa coached West Brisbane to the 1996 QAFL premiership, in his first season as a senior coach. He captained the Brisbane Lions reserves in 1998 and also served as an assistant coach. In 2002, his second year as coach of Mount Gravatt, he steered the club to their maiden AFL Queensland State League premiership.
Barry Denner “Bazz” – After over 15 years calling AFL football, there’s simply no doubt about it, Bazz has developed into one of this country’s best football broadcasters. Over 650 games at the highest level and a 8 time Grand Final caller he is “THEBEST IN THE BUSINESS”.
Andrew Underwood “Undies” – The former Richmond & Essendon utility has been calling for nearly 15 years and is the back bone of the broadcast. He heads up the team for ALL the Adelaide Crows & Port Adelaide Games from AAMI Stadium. Having played at the elite level, he explains very quickly, what will happen before it happens, why, because he knows his stuff. Based in Adelaide he tells the story the way it should be told, and the truth hurts sometimes…..he’s our straight shooter!!!
Richard Griffiths “Griffo” – Without a doubt a key member of the broadcasting team. “Griffo” has a huge job during the week as the CEO of AFLQ. He wants nothing more than to see the great game of AFL prosper in the state of Queensland. On air he heads up ALL the Brisbane Lions games and with analysis from Danny Craven & Darryl White on match days we have the “A” team in Brisbane.
Ron Rogers “Ronny” – A true champion and loved member of the broadcast team, Ronny has been a member since day 1. With 450 games under his belt including 5 Grand Finals, his commitment and passion for the survival of this Broadcast into South East Queensland will never be questioned. He hails from Bendigo and has a great following on THE FRESH FM89 5 in his local region and also right across Australia.
Bruce Eva“Beva” – Beva is a very respected journalist based in Melbourne who has a many years experience in broadcasting and has been calling footy with NIRS for nearly 10 years. Beva is a big asset to the broadcast team.
Terry McAuliffe “T. Mac” – Terry has worked in the Media for over 20 years and in one of Australia’s most respected race callers. He has been with NIRS for the last 2 years and has risen very quickly to be one of the best callers in the team. Based in Adelaide, he regularly calls with Undies providing a very entertaining broadcast.
Andrew Browne “AB” – AB is based in Brisbane. He has a great relationship with all the Brisbane Lions coaching staff. When it happens at the Lions “AB” is OUR man on the scene. He works in the media full time so he has ALL the contacts when it comes to rumors coming out of Queensland.
